Honestly, we absolutely love it when a company ignores its instincts along with the onslaught of advice from its PR firm and talks, err, smack. Despite what some flacks may tell you, people want to hear it like it is and sometimes PR-ified nonsense does more harm than good. Then again, sometimes the opposite is true. Like this time, for instance. Verizon has publicly responded to Cablevision’s new $99 Optimum Ultra 101Mbps residential Internet service in much the same manner a preteen with a hand-me-down Sega Genesis would respond to one touting a brand new Xbox 360. All through the night we received reports from ecstatic T-Mobile G1 users who have been letting us know the Android “cupcake” 1.5 update has been pushed out by T-Mobile. We checked ourselves and this is indeed the case but as some kind readers pointed out to us, customized ROMs can completely thwart a G1’s ability to receive the update notification. It’s not a hard fix to remove those cooked ROMs, so if you want to get your official cupcake on you know what to do. Oh, and let us know how it goes.

Nokia’s Internet Tablets haven’t exactly been a massive success on the user adoption front but Nokia isn’t one to give up. While the company did recently bail on the latest iteration of its N810 tablet, we know the Finnish giant was just looking to distance itself from WiMAX. Nokia is most definitely still cooking up a new tablet sequel and now developers can get a taste of its beta OS — as of this afternoon, the Beta SDK for Maemo 5 is available to all for downloading. Windows Mobile 6.5 users will be able to say bye bye to Microsoft Voice Command and hello to TellMe when next generation Windows Mobile handsets finally hit store shelves this fall. Currently available for BlackBerry handsets via a third party application (ironically provided by Microsoft as TellMe is a subsidiary of the Redmond, WA computer giant) and also present on the Samsung Instinct, TellMe will now be integrated into upcoming Windows Mobile 6.5 handsets. The new TellMe solution will feature one-button, voice-driven access to text messaging, phone dialing, traffic information, GPS data and searching via Microsoft Live search. TellMe for 6.5 will be available for free via the Windows Mobile Marketplace or as a value added feature pre-installed by carriers and handset manufacturers. Sweet!
We’ve heard some rumors about an upcoming PSP refresh in the past — ok, a whole lot of rumors — but new information is casting doubt upon the details of previous information. 1UP is reporting that the new PSP will be christened the PSP Go! and will finally do away with that awful UMD system while taking on a slider form. In place of UMDs, it is said the PSP Go! will come in 8GB and 16GB models meaning a green light for game downloads. As for games, Sony is reportedly planning to have around 100 old and new games ready for launch time. Sadly those of you who were looking for a bit of dual-joystick action will be disappointed to note that according to this new rumor, a second analog stick will not be added to the right-hand side. Such is life, we suppose. Word is Sony will make the PSP Go! official at E3 next month and have it hit the streets in Japan in September with a US launch in either late October or early November — ensuring its inclusion in plenty of letters to Santa. Wait, what? Motorola possibly doing a cross-marketing campaign with a blockbuster movie? We kid, we kid, but hey, we wouldn’t put it past them… We just got hit with some really interesting information — it’s about this Motorola smartphone either called or code-named “IRONMAN”. We’ve been told it will most likely run Android and be out by the end of Q3. While we don’t have exact specs, word is it’s going to sport a screamin’ CPU and have pretty much every feature under the sun — Wi-Fi, 3G, high resolution camera, etc. We’d also assume most of the controls on the front are touch sensitive as there do not seem to be any buttons in the photo. Thoughts?
iSuppli is certainly the authority when it comes to pegging manufacturer costs in the world of handsets, but its latest report has a giant question mark stamped on the cover. Without actually having a handset on hand, the firm has placed Palm’s cost at approximately $138 per unit to build the Pre. Now, we know iSuppli knows its stuff but we have to take issue with the fact that it reached this conclusion without actually, you know, having a Palm Pre on hand to analyze. Instead, iSuppli based the majority of its calculations on assumptions. Educated assumptions, yes, but assumptions none the less. Regardless, it’s safe to say that the firm is certainly in the right ballpark and the Pre will likely cost much less to build than the iPhone, which runs Apple about $174 per unit. Even if iSuppli’s numbers are 10 percent off on the low end, Palm is still looking at doubling down with each unit sold. Not bad, not bad at all.
Well hello there, onslaught of WebOS images — a whole bunch of beautiful new screen grabs of the Mojo SDK running in an emulator have just popped up, shedding plenty of light on the OS everyone is dying to play with. The screenshots provide another glimpse into Google maps, Synergy integration with Microsoft Exchange, Facebook and Google, the finger friendly launcher, the transparent overlay of the applications and dialog boxes and more. If these shots are representative of the entire WebOS experience, Palm may have Apple and Google shaking a bit in their boots, RIM running back to the drawing board to re-design the Storm 2 interface and Microsoft hanging its head in shame over the improved but still-awkward Windows Mobile 6.5 UI.
